Caodaism : Global Ambition vs Persecution Print E-mail

Note - Sergei Blagov – lecturer (Associate Professor) on religions in Vietnam at the Institute of Oriental and African Studies of the Moscow University. His Ph.D. dissertation – the history of Caodaism – was completed in 1991 at the Institute of Anthropology, Moscow. Sergei Blagov stayed in Vietnam in 1983-1984, 1987-1988, 1991, 1993-1997 as a news reporter, simultaneously doing research on the Cao Dai. Apart from teaching, now Sergei Blagov also continues his journalistic career, writing for Inter Press Service news agency, as well as some other media outlets.

 

The following is Sergei Blagov’s presentation at CESNUR (Center for Studies of New Religions) Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on June 3, 1999.

Note : The following text has been submitted by the Cao Dai Overseas Missionary to Mr. Bawa Jain, Secretary General of the Millennium Religious World Summit, which was held at the United Nations on August 27, 2000 to be included in the Summit reports.

 

Caodaism, a new spiritist religion with 5 million followers in Vietnam and worldwide, is greatly honored by the invitation to attend The Millennium World Peace Summit of the Religious and Spiritual Leaders at the United Nations. This precious and unique opportunity to discuss new ways of preventing hostilities and ensuring peace is very much appreciated by all followers of Cao Dai religion. The fact that for the first time ever Religious and Spiritual Leaders representing different faiths and traditions convene at the United Nations has a special importance for Caodaism as our doctrine enshrines tolerance and harmony between all the Religions. But what is Caodaism ?

Caodaism is the first religious community so far that enables its adepts to have direct communication with the transcendental world via institutionalised spiritist seances. We believe that their doctrine provides the synthesis of all great teachings of the past. The full name of Cao Dai religion is “The Great Way of the Third Era of Salvation.” The words “Cao Dai” mean “ High Palace ,” referring to the heavenly palace where the Supreme Being dwells..

The dominant feature of the Tinh Tam Dien is the mural on the wall. The three figures it depicts are Saints through their spiritualistic connection with Caodaism. In plain modern Chinese dress is the founder of the first Chinese Republic Sun Yat Sen (spiritual name: Trung Son Chon Nhon). He holds an inkstone representative of Chinese culture.

 

Next to him in Western dress and white beard is Victor Hugo the compassionate French poet and writer (who reveals himself spiritually as Chuong Dao Nguyet Tam Chon Nhon). He acts in the spiritual realm as the foreign missionary of Caodaism. He writes with a feather pen representing Western Civilisation.

Method of Worshipping and Making Offerings - God's Altar

In establishing an altar to the Supreme Being one must choose a location that is pure. The best position for such a shrine is in the middle of the house, high on the wall with a curtain to draw across. The altar requires:

  • The flowers represent tinh (the body/the material), wine represents khi (or qi/vital essence), tea represents than (the spirit).
  • Tinh, Khi, Than, are the three treasures of Geniis, Saints, Immortals and Buddhas.
